School play: The shadow of Katlehong

On the 26th of March 2015, African School for Excellence conducted a second performance of its highly reviewed play “The Shadow of Katlehong” to a sold-out crowd at the Joburg Theatre. The play made use of a hybrid genre, combining the conventions of musicals, Greek tragedy and modern realism to tell a powerful African ghost story relevant to the social context of our scholars.

Guests in attendance were charmed by the dynamic acting abilities of the scholars and impressed by the fact that the play was written and directly by ASE staff members. Many visitors left the evening saying that they would certainly be back for the next ASE performance.

Read the rave reviews from our last two performances of the play:

“Honestly speaking, it was one of the most engaging, well-organised and performed school plays that I have attended. ASE truly has something magical taking place.” (November 2014)

“I loved the fact that the play was produced by ASE students and team members.” (March 2015)
